What Does ALP Mean in Dogs and Cats?

Quick answer

ALP is an enzyme made by the liver, bones, and other tissues. It often rises when bile flow slows, during growth in young pets, or with certain medications and hormone conditions. In dogs, mild increases are common and not always concerning; in cats, any increase usually deserves a closer look.

What is ALP?

Alkaline phosphatase comes from several tissues, mainly liver and bone. Dogs can also make a steroid-induced form.

Reference range

[Range pending sourced table] Reference ranges vary by lab and species. Use the range printed on your pet's report.

What can raise ALP

  • Slowed bile flow
  • Bone growth in young pets
  • Steroid medications (dogs)
  • Cushing's disease
  • Hyperthyroidism (cats)
  • Some liver conditions

What can lower ALP

  • Low values are rarely significant

Dogs vs cats

In dogs

Dogs often show raised ALP from steroids, Cushing's disease, or benign age-related changes.

In cats

Cats make little ALP and clear it quickly, so even a small rise is meaningful.

Why one value rarely tells the whole story

ALP comes from several tissues, so a high value needs context about age, medications, and other liver markers. Hydration, recent meals, stress during the visit, medications, and how the sample was handled can all shift a result. Vets look at the whole panel, your pet's symptoms, and the trend across tests over time.

Conventional interpretation

Vets pair ALP with GGT and bilirubin to look at bile flow, and consider age, medications, and hormone testing.

Whole-pet context

Note any steroid creams, ear drops, or tablets, recent weight change, thirst, and coat changes.

Supportive options are not a cure. Check with your veterinarian before adding any supplement.

Questions to ask your vet

  • Could growth, medications, or hormones explain this?
  • Should we check GGT or bile acids?
  • Is an ultrasound worthwhile?
  • How does this compare with my pet's previous results?

Frequently asked questions

Why is ALP high in my puppy or kitten?

Growing bones release ALP, so mild increases are expected in young pets.

Can ear drops raise ALP?

Some steroid-containing products can raise ALP in dogs. Tell your vet about every product you use.

What is a normal ALP range?

Reference ranges vary by laboratory, analyzer, and species. Use the range printed on your pet's report and ask your vet how your pet's result compares.

Should ALP be rechecked?

Your veterinarian decides based on how far from range the value is, your pet's symptoms, and other results. Trends over time are often more useful than one result.
